What if money is the lever we need for social and ecological transformation?
I'm Nicolas Franka, economist, speaker, and specialist in alternative currencies. For over 10 years, I’ve been exploring, developing, and supporting initiatives that rethink the role of money in our societies. From creating local currencies to researching complementary monetary systems, my commitment is clear: to empower communities and territories for a fairer and more resilient economy.
Qui suis-je?
Mon parcours n’a rien d’ordinaire. Une enfance semée d’embûches m’a donné mon pire défaut et ma meilleure qualité : une détermination inébranlable pour une passion que j'ai dans la peau.
And determination is exactly what it takes to persevere in the field of money. On the one hand, the substance: the complexity of the topic makes it hard to access, and dominant dogmas leave little room for alternative thinking. On the other hand, the form: the diversity of tools, legal frameworks, and practical considerations requires a rare mix of skills. It took me years to build that expertise — but it’s also what makes my journey so unique.
Struck by the injustice of this world and the actions of powerful financial players, I immediately began working with NGOs, putting my passion for political economy into practice. Discovering the hidden truths about money during my studies in Maastricht was my red pill moment. While easy money was within reach, I chose the path of socio-economic action — to contribute to preserving the planet and building an economy that is fair, inclusive, and sustainable for all.
I’ve worked with NGOs, advised politics & parliaments, written numerous articles, developed local currencies, and taught — notably at the University of Liège.
Today, through the Monetary Diversity network — which brings together over 40 organizations and which I founded — I aim to build bridges between those who believe in a democratic, fair, and sustainable monetary system, one whose power serves the common good of all.
Expertise
Commons economics & Food sovereignity
Rethinking money means reconsidering the value of things — the direction of our life's energy and the meaning behind our actions. An economy guided by values, by the resilience of local communities, by democratic empowerment, and by the preservation of our shared spaces and commons. My work? Turning these inspiring ideas into practical experiments — making them tangible beyond wishful thinking — and moving into action.

Complementary and alternative currencies
They take many forms and remain vastly underutilized. Local currencies, mutual credit systems, and others have barely begun to reveal their full potential. With an unparalleled network of partners, I’m proud to support the growth and empowerment of these initiatives. -
Monetary Design and Innovation
The blockchain craze has at least helped put alternative currencies on the map. But beyond the technology, designing payment systems — both in their nature and their features — is no simple task. That’s where I come in! - Economic Education and Outreach
